Karkinitska Bay and Dzharylhach National Nature Park is a vital coastal and marine protected area in southern Ukraine, known for its unique estuarine ecosystems, wild beaches, and rich biodiversity. It offers excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing, boating, and immersive nature experiences.
Karkinitska Bay and Dzharylhach National Nature Park encompasses the shallow Karkinitska Bay and the adjoining Dzharylhach Island, the largest island in the northern Black Sea. Located in Kherson Oblast, southern Ukraine, this protected area covers a variety of coastal and marine landscapes including sandy beaches, lagoons, salt marshes, reed beds, and unique underwater habitats. Its waters are part of an intercontinental migratory route and serve as breeding grounds for many fish species, as well as nesting sites for diverse birds, including rare and endangered species such as the Dalmatian pelican and the little tern. The park's flora features saline-resistant plants adapted to the bay’s saline and brackish environments. Historically, this area has long been important for fishing and as a natural barrier protecting inland ecosystems.
Recreation in the park emphasizes tranquil natural exploration, birdwatching, and eco-tourism. Visitors can enjoy boat trips to observe the rich marine fauna, explore the island’s wild sandy coastlines, and engage in guided wildlife tours. Although tourism infrastructure is limited to preserve the area’s pristine condition, the park attracts nature enthusiasts and researchers who are drawn by its remarkable biodiversity and relatively undisturbed habitats. The park serves as an essential conservation area for the Black Sea flora and fauna and is part of several international ecological networks focusing on wetland and coastal protection.
